According to the minutes of the British North America 1867, the Canadian Parliament consists of the Monarch of Canada (Now Queen Elizabeth II), the Senate and the House of Commons. The monarch is the head of state in the country, officially represented by Governor General (currently Michaëlle Jean). It approves the 105 members of the Senate who are appointed by the Prime Minister of Canada. The 308 members of the House of Commons are directly elected by the country's population, each member represents one of the 308 constituencies in which the country is divided.
